New Hampshire Propane and LP-Gas Storage Standards

Under RSA 153 and the State Fire Code adopted by the State Fire Marshal, all LP-gas (propane) storage, handling, transportation, and installation must comply with NFPA 58 Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code. Tank setback distances, container marking, vehicle storage, and dispensing facilities follow uniform statewide standards. Gas fitters must be licensed by the New Hampshire Mechanical Licensing Board. Local fire officials enforce the code, but cannot adopt requirements less stringent than state standards. New installations and tank exchanges of certain sizes require permits and inspections through the local fire department under the adopted state code.

Code violations may result in misdemeanor charges, civil penalties, suspension of installer licensure, and orders to remove non-compliant tanks under RSA 153:5 and RSA 153:30.
