Oregon Heritage Tree Program State Designation Process

ORS 358.715 to 358.720 establishes the Oregon Heritage Tree Program administered by the Oregon Travel Information Council. The Heritage Tree Committee reviews public nominations and designates trees that have exceptional historical, cultural, ecological, or aesthetic value. Designated heritage trees receive an official plaque and recognition but the state designation itself does not override local removal authority on private land unless the owner consents. On state-owned property, designation triggers preservation obligations on the managing agency. Local governments may adopt their own heritage tree ordinances providing additional regulatory protection for designated trees within their jurisdictions.

Removal of a state-designated heritage tree on state-owned land without authorization violates state property management rules. On private property, state designation imposes no penalty unless adopted into local code.
