Rhode Island Short-Term Rental Liability Insurance Mandate

Under RIGL 42-63.1.1-3, as part of statewide STR registration, owners must attest to and provide proof of liability insurance with at least $1,000,000 in coverage applicable to the rental activity. Coverage may be provided by the host directly or through a hosting platform's insurance program (such as Airbnb's Host Liability Insurance) that meets the minimum. The Department of Business Regulation may suspend or revoke registration for failure to maintain coverage. This requirement applies uniformly throughout Rhode Island and supplements any local lodging requirements.

Operating without required insurance coverage may result in registration suspension, fines up to $250 per day, and personal liability for any damages.
