Virginia Grass and Weed Height Enabling Statute

Virginia is a Dillon's Rule state, meaning localities may only regulate grass height where the General Assembly grants explicit authority. Va. Code § 15.2-901 enables counties, cities, and towns to require owners to cut grass, weeds, and foreign growth on occupied residential property. Localities may also recover abatement costs as a lien against the property. Specific height thresholds (commonly 12 inches) are set locally, but enforcement powers, lien rights, and notice procedures derive from state statute.
