Wisconsin Pool Barrier Code Requirements Statewide

Wis. Stat. § 101.65 grants statewide jurisdiction over the Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC) for one and two-family dwellings, preventing municipalities from adopting more or less stringent building standards. SPS 390 covers public swimming pool design, including barrier requirements. Residential pools generally require a barrier at least 4 feet high under building code provisions. Self-closing, self-latching gates opening outward away from the pool are required. Local municipalities may adopt the UDC but cannot impose conflicting barrier height or construction rules.

Code violations may halt construction, require corrective work before occupancy, and incur fines. Public pool violations under SPS 390 can result in closure orders by DSPS.
