Wyoming Open Carry of Firearms Rules

Wyoming has long recognized open carry without a permit for any person 18 or older who is not prohibited from possessing firearms under state or federal law. Local governments cannot enact ordinances banning open carry due to W.S. 6-8-401 preemption. Open carry remains restricted in specific locations such as schools (W.S. 6-8-104), courtrooms, government meetings, and federally controlled facilities. Brandishing or aiming a firearm at another person is independently criminalized regardless of carry method.

Open carrying in prohibited locations or by prohibited persons is a misdemeanor or felony depending on circumstances, with penalties including jail, fines, and loss of firearm privileges.
