Wyoming Lacks Statewide Sanctuary or Anti-Sanctuary Mandate

Unlike several neighboring states, the Wyoming Legislature has not passed a statute compelling local law enforcement to honor U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers, share custody data, or otherwise act as immigration agents. Wyoming has likewise not enacted a sanctuary statute restricting local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The result is a default of local discretion: county sheriffs and municipal police departments establish their own policies on detainer compliance, jail notifications, and 287(g) participation, subject to federal constitutional and statutory limits. Several Wyoming counties operate jails that voluntarily honor ICE detainers and notifications, while no Wyoming jurisdiction has adopted formal sanctuary status. Residents and noncitizens should consult specific county sheriff policies for current practices.

Because no statewide mandate exists, there is no state-level penalty for either declining or accepting cooperation with ICE; conduct is governed by federal law, agency policy, and constitutional limits on detentions.
