Standard Castro Valley parcels have no general private-property tree protection ordinance. Only street trees in the County right-of-way (PWA Tree Ordinance) and the Fairview view-ordinance Ch. 6.66 apply.
Unlike Berkeley or Oakland, Alameda County has not adopted a county-wide private-property tree-protection ordinance. The County's only regulated trees are 'street trees' in the public right-of-way (governed by the PWA Tree Ordinance). Within the Castro Valley General Plan there is recommendation language to study a heritage/native tree protection ordinance, but as of 2026 none has been adopted. Fairview District residents have view-protection rights against trees on neighboring private property under Ch. 6.66, but Fairview is not Castro Valley proper. PG&E retains tree-trimming rights near power lines under CPUC GO 95.
Removing a street tree without PWA permit: misdemeanor + replacement cost. Otherwise no county penalty for private tree removal in standard Castro Valley.
