Lompoc Zoning Code Title 17 exempts one-story detached accessory structures (tool/storage sheds, playhouses) up to 120 square feet from building permits, consistent with the California Building Code. Detached accessory structures must be located on the rear half of the lot, with at least 5 feet between the main building and any accessory structure. Side and rear setbacks may be reduced for small sheds subject to a height-at-property-line formula.
Per Lompoc's Zoning Code (Title 17, General Site Development Standards), single-story detached accessory structures used as tool/storage sheds, playhouses, and similar uses with floor area no greater than 120 sq ft (no plumbing or electrical) are exempt from a building permit under the California Building Code, but must still meet zoning setbacks. In residential zones, a detached accessory structure may extend into the interior side and rear setbacks provided no portion exceeds 9 feet in height at the property line, increasing at 2.2 feet (26.4 inches) per additional foot from the property line, up to a maximum of 20 feet at a point 5 feet from the property line.
