Haltom City permits residential beekeeping with setback conditions under Chapter 14. TX Ag Code 131 and TAIS govern beekeeping statewide. Hobby beekeepers need no state registration; interstate moves need a TAIS permit.
Haltom City does not impose a blanket ban on beekeeping. Under Chapter 14 of the Code of Ordinances, hives are generally allowed on residential lots subject to practical conditions: hives must be set back from property lines and from neighboring dwellings (often 10 to 25 feet), colonies must be requeened if they show aggressive behavior, and adequate water must be provided on the property to prevent bees from foraging on neighbors' pools or water features. A flyway barrier at least 6 feet tall in front of hives is a common best practice. Texas Agriculture Code Chapter 131 regulates apiaries statewide through the Texas Apiary Inspection Service (TAIS) at Texas A and M. Hobby beekeepers do not need state registration, but moving hives across state lines requires a 200 dollar permit and health certificate from TAIS. Large commercial operations register with TAIS. Africanized Honey Bee (AHB) populations are present across North Texas, so requeening from certified European stock is standard practice.
Class C misdemeanor under Chapter 14 for aggressive or unsanitary apiaries; fine up to 500 dollars per day. Hive removal can be ordered for repeated nuisance colonies.
