Auburn prohibits horses, cattle, hogs, sheep, goats, and similar livestock within the established stock district. Outside it, most livestock is allowed only on Rural (R) lots of three acres or more, and horses require at least two acres with one horse per acre.
Auburn regulates livestock through Section 501.03(B) of the City of Auburn Zoning Ordinance and Section 4-2 of the City Code. The keeping or maintaining of horses, mules, cattle, sheep, goats, hogs, fowl, or any other such animal is prohibited within the stock district, which is established by the governing body and shown on a map on file in the Planning Department. Inside the stock district such animals are declared a nuisance (chickens are the regulated exception, allowed by permit under the urban chicken rules). Outside the established stock district, mules, cattle, sheep, goats, hogs, fowl, or any other such animal may only be maintained on lots of three (3) acres or more in the Rural (R) District. Horses may be maintained only outside the stock district on lots of two (2) acres or more, with a limit of one horse per acre. The City Code's stock-district prohibition does not prevent maintaining such animals for instruction, experimentation, or research at an institution of higher learning, reflecting Auburn University's agricultural programs. Residents who keep livestock should confirm their parcel's zoning district, acreage, and location relative to the stock district map with the Auburn Planning Department before acquiring animals.
Keeping prohibited livestock inside the stock district is declared a nuisance that the person in control of the premises must abate (City Code Section 4-2). Keeping livestock outside the stock district on lots that do not meet the Rural (R) zoning, acreage, or per-acre limits violates Zoning Ordinance Section 501.03(B).
