In single-family residential zones, Chatham County caps ownership at 6 adult dogs (over 1 year) per acre and 8 cats, unless the animals are permanently confined to the home's living space. Litters under four months old don't count.
Chatham County Code Β§22-212 sets residential animal limits. For dogs, no owner in a single-family residential zone may have more than 6 adult dogs over 1 year of age per acre. For cats, no such owner may have more than 8 cats unless all animals are permanently confined to the actual living space of the residence. Puppies and kittens under four months of age, and their nursing litters, are excluded from the count so long as they are confined indoors. These caps run alongside the county's spay/neuter requirement for free-roaming outdoor cats and the rabies-vaccination and licensing duties in Β§22-201.
Exceeding the limits is a Chapter 22 violation enforceable by Animal Services citation and impoundment, with a fine of not less than $100 and up to $1,000 per count (Β§22-106).
