Growing cannabis at home is legal across Essex County. An adult 21 or older can cultivate up to 6 plants, and a household up to 12, out of public view. No Essex town can ban home growing that state law protects.
MGL c.94G §7 lets any adult 21 or over possess, cultivate, or process up to six marijuana plants for personal use, capped at twelve plants per household regardless of how many adults live there. The plants must be grown where the public cannot see them and secured from anyone under 21. This is a statewide right — Lynn, Salem, Peabody, and every other Essex community follow it, and local marijuana bans reach commercial establishments, not personal home cultivation. No license or town permit is needed to grow within these limits.
Growing more than the plant limits, leaving plants in public view, or leaving them accessible to minors forfeits the legal protection and exposes the grower to civil or criminal marijuana penalties and seizure of the plants.
