Flood Zones

Moss Point is a Gulf Coast city at the confluence of the Pascagoula and Escatawpa Rivers and was severely flooded by Hurricane Katrina's storm surge in August 2005. Substantial portions of the city are mapped in FEMA Special Flood Hazard Areas, including Zone AE inland and coastal Zone VE (Coastal High Hazard Area subject to wave action). The City participates in the National Flood Insurance Program and has adopted an additional 1-foot freeboard above the FEMA Base Flood Elevation, exceeding the NFIP minimum. FEMA's 50-percent substantial-damage / substantial-improvement rule applies to repairs and remodels in mapped flood zones.
