Chicago FAQ

Can a Chicago school install classroom barricade devices?

Only devices meeting ANSI/BHMA A156.41 that allow free egress with a single motion and unlock from outside for emergency responders are permitted. Wedges and improvised barricades violate MCC 14B-1010.

Are deadbolts allowed on apartment unit doors?

Yes, but only if they release with the same motion as the latch. Double-cylinder keyed deadbolts that need a key from inside are prohibited on dwelling-unit egress doors under MCC 14B-1010.

Tinley Park FAQ

Can I add a deadbolt to my office suite door?

Only if it is interconnected with the latch so a single motion releases both, and the door is not part of a required egress path with more than 50 occupants. Otherwise it violates IFC 1010.

Are classroom barricade devices allowed?

Illinois permits limited classroom security devices but they must allow free egress, not require special tools, and meet state Office of the State Fire Marshal guidance for active-shooter response.
