Can I keep backyard chickens in Katy?

Only on a tract of at least one acre and capped at 25 chickens or other fowl. Birds must be kept in closed pens and may not wander the premises. Smaller residential lots cannot keep fowl at all.

Are pigs allowed in Katy city limits?

No. Swine are banned within Katy. The only exception is for FFA or 4-H members who obtain signed waivers from all landowners within 100 feet of the proposed pen.

Sugar Land FAQ

Can I keep chickens in Sugar Land?

No. Chickens and other livestock are not permitted in standard residential zoning districts (R-1, R-1R, R-1Z). Only agricultural or rural zones may allow livestock. Check the Land Use Matrix (Sec. 2-71) for your zoning district.

Are roosters allowed in Sugar Land?

No. Roosters and all poultry are prohibited in residential zones under the Development Code. Keeping roosters would also likely generate noise complaints under Sec. 3-101.
