What permits do I need for coastal construction in North Miami?

In addition to city building permits, development seaward of the FDEP Coastal Construction Control Line requires a separate FDEP coastal construction permit. Can I trim mangroves on my waterfront property in North Miami?

Mangrove trimming and alteration is regulated under Florida Statute 403.9321-403.9333. Professional mangrove trimmers may trim mangroves up to certain heights depending on the size of the area, but an FDEP permit is required for most trimming activities. Removal of mangroves is generally prohibited.

Are there lighting restrictions for coastal properties in North Miami?

Yes. During sea turtle nesting season (March 1 through October 31), coastal properties must minimize artificial lighting visible from nesting beaches. This may require shielded fixtures, amber-colored lighting, or repositioning of exterior lights.
