Paramus FAQ

Do I need a permit to trim a tree in front of my house?

If the tree stands in the public right-of-way or on Borough property, yes. The Shade Tree and Parks Commission must issue a permit before any trimming or care work begins.

Are trees on my private property covered?

Generally no, unless the property is undeveloped or contains a Zoning Board required planted buffer area. Trimming healthy trees on developed lots usually does not require a Commission permit.

Can I hire any landscaper to prune street trees?

Only with Commission authorization. Private companies cannot perform tree care on public trees without an approved permit, and unauthorized work exposes both the homeowner and contractor to penalties.

Ridgewood FAQ

Can I trim the street tree in front of my house?

No. Chapter 260 forbids residents from pruning trees in the public right-of-way. Contact the Parks and Shade Tree Division at 201-670-5565 to request maintenance from the Village.

Do I need approval to prune trees on my own yard?

Routine pruning of trees on private property is generally allowed, but full removal of any tree eight inches or more in diameter requires a permit under Chapter 260.
