Petaluma FAQ

Do I need a zoning permit for a home business in unincorporated Sonoma County?

Not if you meet every standard in Sec. 26-88-121. Since Ordinance No. 6363 took effect on December 14, 2021, the home occupation is allowed by-right with no zoning permit required, provided your activity, customer counts, employees, signage, and floor area all comply.

Can I have employees working from my Sonoma County home business?

Only if they live in the dwelling. Sec. 26-88-121 states no person may be employed in the home occupation other than residents of the dwelling. Hiring an outside employee to work at the home site disqualifies the use from the home occupation pathway and requires a Live/Work permit.

How many customers can visit my home business each day?

Sec. 26-88-121 caps customer visits at 4 per day with no more than 2 on-site simultaneously, and limits hours to 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Deliveries are separately capped at 10 per week. Exceeding any of these requires a discretionary Live/Work permit.
