Lake County, IL Drone Rules: Recreational Drones (2026)

Recreational drone operations in Lake County are governed by FAA regulations under 49 USC §44809 (Exception for Recreational Flyers) and Illinois state laws. All drones over 0.55 lbs must be registered with the FAA; operators must complete The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) before flight. Altitude is capped at 400 feet AGL, operators must maintain visual line of sight, and flight near airports requires LAANC authorization. Critical Lake County airspace considerations: O'Hare International (KORD) Class B airspace extends into southern Lake County (Highland Park, Lake Forest north-shore approaches); Waukegan National Airport (KUGN) has Class D airspace; Chicago Executive (KPWK) affects far southern Lake County.
