Allen enforces a 25-foot sight visibility triangle at all corner lots and a smaller triangle at driveway approaches. Fences, hedges, and landscaping within the triangle cannot exceed 30 inches in height.
The Allen Land Development Code (ALDC) sight-visibility triangle requirement protects intersection sightlines for drivers and pedestrians. At corner lots, nothing between 30 inches and 8 feet in height may be placed within a 25-foot-by-25-foot triangle measured from the intersection of the two street right-of-way lines. At driveway approaches, a smaller 10-foot triangle applies to keep backing vehicles visible. Common violations involve mature hedges, decorative stone walls, monument signs, and trailers parked in the triangle. Code Compliance enforces this strictly because it is a safety-of-life issue — Texas Transportation Code Sec. 545.301 and Allen traffic ordinances treat sightline obstruction as contributing to liability in intersection collisions. Trees with canopies trimmed to 8 feet clear are allowed; low branches that hang into the triangle must be pruned.
Notice to abate within 7-10 days; failure to comply, up to $500 per day under Allen Code Sec. 1-7. City may trim at owner expense as last resort.
