Broward County is one of only two Florida counties (with Miami-Dade) inside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) defined by the Florida Building Code. Every fence must meet HVHZ wind-load requirements: posts set in concrete footings at least 24 to 36 inches deep, spacing typically 6 to 8 feet on center, and products that carry Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA) approval. Wood fences use pressure-treated Southern yellow pine rated for ground contact; aluminum picket fences must be wind-rated; PVC fences must be hurricane-grade with aluminum-reinforced rails. Chain link is permitted but generally prohibited in front yards by most Broward HOAs. Barbed wire and electric fences are restricted to agricultural and industrial zones.
