Fences, hedges, and structures on corner lots must not obstruct the vision triangle at intersections. Typical requirement is clear sight from 2.5 feet to 8 feet above grade within a 25-foot triangle measured from the curb intersection.
Canal Winchester Planning & Zoning Code establishes a vision clearance or sight triangle at all street intersections and driveway-street intersections to maintain safe sight distance for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. On corner lots, no fence, wall, hedge, shrub, sign, or other obstruction more than 30 inches (2.5 feet) above curb grade and less than 8 feet above grade may be maintained within a triangle formed by the two intersecting street right-of-way lines and a chord connecting points 25 feet from their intersection. Larger triangles (up to 40 feet) may apply at major collector or arterial intersections such as Gender Road, Waterloo Street, and Washington Street. The Zoning Administrator enforces sight-triangle standards at the time of fence permit review and in response to complaints. Tree canopies above 8 feet are typically permitted if trunks do not intrude.
Obstructions in the sight triangle are zoning violations; owner receives written notice and 10 days to cure by trimming or removal. Failure to comply results in fines up to $150 per day and the city may remove obstructions and lien the cost against the property under Canal Winchester Codified Ordinance 1109.
