Fences in unincorporated St. Clair County may run along lot lines but must keep corner intersections clear: no obstruction higher than two feet above the curb is allowed within the sight-triangle 'restricted area,' improving visibility for converging vehicles.
Section 40-5-5(A) protects traffic safety at intersections: on any corner lot, obstructions higher than two feet above the adjacent top-of-curb elevation may not be planted, placed or erected within the triangular 'restricted area' defined in Figure 1, Sec. 40-2-3. Fences up to six feet may otherwise sit on the lot line, while taller fences must meet district yard setbacks (Sec. 40-5-5(D)). These placement rules apply to the unincorporated county; municipalities set their own standards.
Placing a sight-obstructing fence in the restricted area is a Class B misdemeanor, fined $50 to $500 plus costs (Sec. 40-11-10), each day a separate offense.
