Corner lot sight-triangle requirements are set by each Suffolk town zoning code. Typical sight triangles require a 25 to 30 foot clear zone at intersections where fences and landscaping over 30 inches are prohibited. This applies to residential corner lots throughout the county.
Brookhaven Code 85-325, Islip Code 68-405, and Huntington Code 198 impose sight-triangle rules. Suffolk County Department of Public Works (DPW) enforces sight distances on county roads (CR routes), which cross multiple towns. NY MUTCD and AASHTO standards inform sight-distance calculations. Hedges, fences, and signs in the triangle must be kept below 30 inches from grade.
Town fines $100 to $500 plus abatement. Suffolk County DPW can order removal on county roads without notice if safety hazard is immediate.
