Fence height limits in Suffolk County are set by each town zoning code, not county-wide. Typical limits are 4 feet in front yards and 6 feet in side and rear yards for residential lots. Agricultural and commercial zones allow taller fences. Pool fencing has separate 4-foot minimum requirements under state code.
Brookhaven Town Code 85-332, Islip Code 68, Huntington Code 198, and Smithtown Code 322 all apply the 4 ft front / 6 ft rear standard. East End towns (Southampton, East Hampton) may require historic district review for fences in scenic corridors. Corner lots have additional sight-triangle setbacks. Deer fences up to 8 feet are permitted in many East End agricultural and residential zones to protect landscaping.
Over-height fences typically $250 to $1,000 plus removal order. Stop-work orders issued on unpermitted construction in progress.
