Oklahoma City requires permits for fences over 8 feet and all masonry/concrete fences. Edmond, Midwest City, Del City have similar thresholds. Unincorporated county follows IRC standards.
Oklahoma City Municipal Code Β§59-9100 exempts standard residential fences (wood, vinyl, chain-link) under 8 feet from building permits. Fences over 8 feet, all masonry and concrete fences, and any fence along right-of-way require a permit from OKC Development Services. Edmond Code Β§22-4 requires permits for fences over 6 feet in rear/side yards. Midwest City and Del City follow OKC's 8-foot threshold. Pool barrier fences must meet IRC Appendix G regardless of height. Oklahoma County unincorporated areas follow the 2018 IRC with county amendments. Critical for Oklahoma: utility easements and abundant oil & gas pipeline easements (Chesapeake, Devon, Continental) can prohibit fence placement entirely β call OK811 (800-522-6543) before digging. HOAs in Gaillardia, Oak Tree, and Fairview Farm require separate architectural review.
Unpermitted fence: stop-work order, retroactive permit with 2x fee penalty, $100 to $500 (OKC Β§59-9999). May require modification or removal.
