Sonora Permit Requirements Rules (2026): What You Need to Know

Under California Building Code as locally adopted by Sonora, standard residential fences constructed of wood, vinyl, or chain-link that do not exceed 6 feet in height generally do not require a building permit. This exemption applies to conventional fence construction on standard residential parcels. However, zoning compliance — such as the 3-foot front yard limit and 6-foot rear/side yard limit — must always be observed, and it is advisable to confirm with the Community Development Department before beginning construction.

Fences requiring a building permit include: any fence over 6 feet in height, masonry or concrete block walls at any height, retaining walls over 4 feet measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, and fences on commercial properties or multi-family residential sites. Permitted fence projects will be reviewed for structural adequacy, setback compliance, and zoning conformance. Permit applications are submitted to the Building Division of the Community Development Department at Sonora City Hall.

Electric fences and barbed wire fences in residential zones are subject to additional review and may be prohibited or restricted under safety codes. Pool enclosure fences have their own permitting and height requirements under California pool barrier law.
