Georgia Residential Code (IRC with GA amendments) Appendix G requires: (1) barrier minimum 48 inches high, measured from outside ground; (2) no gaps under barrier exceeding 2 inches; (3) chain-link mesh openings no larger than 1.75 inches (unless slatted); (4) gates must open outward, be self-closing and self-latching; (5) gate latch release mechanism at least 54 inches above grade; (6) house wall counts as part of barrier only if windows/doors are alarmed or screened. Applies to any pool/spa capable of holding water more than 24 inches deep.
No permit / non-compliant barrier: $500-$2,500 fine plus immediate pool closure order. Liability exposure for drowning incidents.
