Indianapolis adopts the Indiana Residential Code under Rev. Code Ch. 536, which requires a minimum 48-inch barrier around residential pools 24 inches deep or more, with self-closing and self-latching gates.
Indianapolis pool barriers are governed by the Indiana Residential Code (incorporating IRC Appendix G) as adopted in Rev. Code Ch. 536. Any outdoor swimming pool, including spas and hot tubs, with water depth of 24 inches or more must be completely enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high measured on the outside. Openings in the barrier cannot allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. Gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing, self-latching, and have the release mechanism at least 54 inches above the ground. Where a dwelling wall serves as part of the barrier, doors leading to the pool yard must have alarms or the pool must have a powered safety cover.
Pools or spas built or modified without compliant barriers can trigger stop-work orders, civil fines under Ch. 536 enforcement, and revocation of the pool permit.
