Rankin County enforces IRC Appendix G pool barrier requirements: minimum 48-inch barrier around all residential pools and spas with self-closing, self-latching gates. Barrier inspection is required before final pool permit sign-off. Applies to in-ground and above-ground pools holding 24+ inches of water.
Rankin County adopts the International Residential Code Appendix G for residential pool and spa barriers. Required features: minimum 48-inch barrier height measured from outside; maximum 2-inch gap between barrier and ground (4 inches over gravel or stone); openings in barrier not exceeding 4 inches to prevent child passage; horizontal barrier members less than 45 inches apart must be on the pool side with no more than 1.75-inch vertical gaps between; self-closing, self-latching gates opening away from the pool with latch release mechanisms at least 54 inches above ground (or 3 inches below the top of the gate if latch is on pool side). Where a dwelling wall forms part of the barrier, doors opening directly to the pool area must have self-closing devices and either door alarms (85 dB at 10 feet) or a power safety cover. Above-ground pools with 48+ inch walls and removable ladders may qualify as their own barrier. Final pool permit sign-off requires on-site inspection of barriers and gates.
Pool operation without compliant barrier: stop use order, fines $200 to $1,000, potential criminal charges if drowning results. Insurance denial for accidents without code-compliant barrier. Civil liability for attractive nuisance.
