Mansfield allows backyard recreational fires in contained pits or approved appliances for cooking or warming. Fires must be attended, use clean fuel, and stay 25 feet from structures. Prohibited during burn bans.
The City of Mansfield permits backyard recreational fires under the International Fire Code adopted into the citys fire prevention regulations. Allowed appliances include chimineas, manufactured fire pits, masonry fire rings, and portable propane fire features. Fires must burn only clean seasoned wood, charcoal, or approved manufactured logs; burning yard waste, trash, painted or treated wood, and construction debris is prohibited. Open recreational fires are limited to 3 feet in diameter and must be located at least 25 feet from structures, fences, combustible materials, and property lines. Enclosed propane and natural gas appliances with reduced clearances may be placed closer to structures per manufacturer specifications. A responsible adult must supervise the fire at all times, and a garden hose, bucket of water, or fire extinguisher must be immediately available. Fires are prohibited during Tarrant County burn bans, when winds exceed 15 mph, or when air quality alerts are in effect. Do not dispose of hot ashes until fully cooled.
Unattended fires or fires violating size, setback, or fuel requirements can result in citations and civil penalties. Fires during burn bans are prohibited and subject to enhanced penalties. The Fire Department may respond with apparatus to extinguish unsafe fires. Contact Mansfield Fire at (817) 276-4800.
