Backyard recreational fires allowed in McKinney when contained in approved pits or portable devices, maximum 3 ft pile size, 25 ft from structures, attended at all times. Prohibited during active Collin County burn bans (except gas pits).
Cooking fires in permanent grills or portable BBQs are exempt from pit size rules but must still maintain safe clearance. Chimineas and patio fire bowls count as approved containers. Fire Marshal may order any fire extinguished that produces offensive smoke, creates a hazard, or violates air quality alerts. Neighbors bothered by smoke can file nuisance complaints through Code Services.
Unsafe or prohibited fires: citation 100 to 500 dollars. Burn ban violation: up to 500 dollars under Local Government Code 352.081.
