A backyard fire in Yakima must comply with three layers: (1) the 2021 Washington State Fire Code adopted at YMC Chapter 10.05 limits recreational fires to 3-foot-diameter, 2-foot-tall fuel areas with a 25-foot setback (IFC 307.4.2); (2) WAC 173-425 prohibits residential yard-waste/land-clearing burning inside cities and urban growth areas; and (3) Yakima Regional Clean Air Agency Stage 1/Stage 2 calls ban all outdoor fires - explicitly including fire pits and fire bowls - countywide. Charcoal, propane, and natural gas barbeques remain allowed.
A 'backyard fire' in the City of Yakima is either a recreational fire or a portable outdoor fireplace under the 2021 Washington State Fire Code (IFC Sections 307.4.2 and 307.4.3) adopted at YMC Chapter 10.05. IFC 307.4.2 limits recreational fires to a fuel area not more than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height, requires a 25-foot setback from any structure or combustible material, requires that conditions which could cause the fire to spread be eliminated prior to ignition, and requires the fire to be constantly attended until extinguished with a means of extinguishment readily available. IFC 307.4.3 allows portable outdoor fireplaces in one- and two-family dwellings provided they are used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and located at least 15 feet from any structure or combustible material. Independent of the fire code, WAC 173-425-040 prohibits residential outdoor burning inside cities and urban growth areas - so burning yard waste, leaves, brush, or household debris in a Yakima backyard is prohibited regardless of pit size. Only natural untreated wood (for recreational fires) and propane/natural gas/charcoal (for barbeque) are clearly allowed; YRCAA's published rules confirm that propane, natural gas, and charcoal-fueled barbeques may be used during the YRCAA-monitored summer ban. During a YRCAA Stage 1 (Yellow) or Stage 2 (Red) call all outdoor burning is banned countywide, expressly including outdoor fireplaces, fire bowls, fire pits, and similar devices. DNR fire restrictions under RCW 76.04 may add further limits during the April-October fire-protection season.
Yakima Fire Department enforces backyard-fire rules under YMC Chapter 10.05 and the adopted 2021 Washington State Fire Code. A fire officer may order an unlawful fire extinguished under IFC Section 307.3. Burning yard waste, leaves, brush, or other prohibited materials violates WAC 173-425 and is enforced by YRCAA under RCW 70A.15. Contact Yakima Fire 509-575-6060 or YRCAA 509-834-2050.
