Oklahoma City requires property owners to maintain grass, weeds, and brush under 12 inches tall and to clear combustible vegetation from around structures. Tall grass and overgrown lots are enforced by code enforcement, with fines and city-contracted mowing billed to the owner. Wildfire-prone western and northern edges face additional scrutiny during fire season.
Oklahoma City Municipal Code Chapter 41 requires all property owners to maintain grass, weeds, and rank vegetation at a height of 12 inches or less on developed lots and within 50 feet of any structure on undeveloped lots. Overgrown vegetation is considered a nuisance and public-health hazard because it harbors pests, creates fire fuel, and reduces visibility. Enforcement is handled by the Code Enforcement division of the Development Services Department, which responds to complaints filed through the Action Center or OKC Connect.
When a violation is confirmed, the property owner receives a notice with 10 days to abate. If the owner fails to comply, the city contracts a mowing crew and bills the owner, typically $150 to $400 plus an administrative fee; unpaid charges become a lien against the property. In wildfire-prone areas along the western and northern edges of the city and near Lake Stanley Draper, OKCFD may require additional defensible space β 30 feet of lean clean vegetation around structures during red-flag weather. During active burn bans, failure to clear dry brush within 30 feet of a home can factor into insurance claims and liability if a wildfire spreads from the property.
Specific penalty amounts for this ordinance are not published in a publicly accessible fine schedule. Contact Oklahoma City code enforcement directly for current fines, enforcement procedures, and hearing options.
