Alpharetta, GA Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Section 20-6 of the Alpharetta Code of Ordinances sets the geographic limits within which bulk storage of liquefied petroleum gas is restricted under chapter 61 of the fire prevention code adopted by the city. Those limits cover all areas within the incorporated limits of the city except property zoned "I," light industrial district, meaning a residential or commercial lot anywhere else in Alpharetta is subject to the restricted-storage rule rather than being treated the same as an industrial site. The fire prevention code itself is adopted by reference in Sec.

8-29(a)(3), and the fire chief has authority under Sec. 20-2 to modify its provisions on written application when strict compliance creates practical difficulties, provided public safety is preserved. A property owner denied a modification, or refused a permit tied to propane storage, can appeal the fire chief's decision to the city council within 30 days under Sec. 20-4. The same restricted-area concept applies one section earlier, in Sec. 20-5, to storage of explosives and blasting agents, which are likewise barred citywide except in the "I" light industrial district, showing the city's consistent approach of confining the most hazardous bulk storage to its single industrial zone rather than regulating it lot by lot.
