Los Angeles Fire Code Β§61 and Β§6101.6 limit residential outdoor propane storage to cylinders aggregating ten gallons (about 42 pounds) without a permit, require LAFD permits above 25 gallons, and prohibit indoor storage of cylinders larger than one pound.
Los Angeles Fire Code Chapter 61 and Β§6101.6 govern storage and dispensing of liquefied petroleum gas. A single-family home may keep up to ten gallons (roughly two 20-pound BBQ cylinders) outdoors with no permit, sited at least five feet from doorways, windows, and combustible buildings. Aggregate storage between ten and 25 gallons is allowed with cylinder labelling and clearance to property lines. Storage above 25 gallons or any tank above 125 gallons water capacity requires an LAFD operational permit, plan review, and seismic anchoring. Cylinders larger than one pound may not be stored inside dwellings. Tank exchange cages at retailers follow NFPA 58.
Exceeding the ten-gallon residential exemption without proper setbacks, storing cylinders indoors, or operating above 25 gallons without an LAFD permit can trigger red-tag removal, citations up to $500, and abatement orders under LAFC Β§61.
