Knoxville, TN Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Any aboveground tank over sixty gallons storing flammable or combustible liquids, including propane, needs a permit from the city fire prevention bureau before it goes into service. Emergency and stand-by generators with integral tanks between 60 and 1,500 gallons are allowed with a permit anywhere except residentially zoned property. Tanks or generator tanks over 1,500 gallons are restricted to I-G, I-H, or I-MU industrial zones, or to properties the fire marshal designates as essential services. Every tank must be tested by the fire prevention bureau before first use, and LPG tank installation carries its own $60.00 permit fee under the city's fee schedule.
