Tucson Fire Department enforces the adopted International Fire Code limits on propane cylinder size and quantity at homes. Larger tanks require setbacks from buildings, property lines, and ignition sources, plus permits from TFD.
Tucson Code Chapter 10 adopts the International Fire Code (IFC), and Tucson Fire Department (TFD) Prevention enforces propane (LP-gas) storage limits. At single-family homes, small portable cylinders for grills are allowed, but stationary tanks above the IFC residential threshold trigger setback requirements from buildings, property lines, and ignition sources. Tanks above defined gallons require a TFD permit and an inspection of installation, anchoring, and venting. Cylinders cannot be stored indoors, in occupied attached garages, or on balconies of multifamily buildings. Refilling must occur at a licensed dispensary. Tucson's hot summers also trigger guidance against storing cylinders in direct sun.
Violations include over-size or over-quantity storage, missing TFD permits, indoor or balcony storage, and improper setbacks. TFD can issue notices, require removal, and fine repeat offenders.
