Kentucky allows lawful adults to carry firearms openly or concealed inside a motor vehicle without a permit. Permitless concealed carry at 21 and statewide preemption prevent local governments from imposing stricter vehicle carry rules.
Under KRS 237.110 and KRS 527.020, a person legally permitted to possess a firearm may carry it loaded or unloaded in a vehicle in Kentucky. KRS 527.020 expressly authorizes carrying a concealed firearm in a glove compartment, regularly used container, or factory-installed enclosed compartment without a license. KRS 237.109 and KRS 237.110 allow permitless concealed carry on the person at age 21 for those legally able to possess. KRS 65.870 preempts local ordinances that would restrict firearms in vehicles, so cities and counties cannot adopt stricter rules. Restrictions remain for parking on school property and other posted locations defined by state and federal law.
Unlawful carrying by a prohibited person or in restricted locations such as schools is generally a Class A misdemeanor under KRS 527.020, with felony enhancement for prior offenses or aggravating circumstances.
