Iowa allows qualifying adults 21 and older to carry loaded handguns in private vehicles without a permit under permitless carry reforms in House File 756.
Iowa Code chapter 724 governs the transportation of firearms in vehicles. Since House File 756 took effect July 1, 2021, Iowa is a permitless carry state, meaning adults age 21 or older who are not prohibited persons may transport a loaded handgun in a private vehicle without a permit to carry. Long guns transported in vehicles must generally be unloaded under Iowa Code 483A.36 when carried in a way associated with hunting activity. Iowa Code 724.28 preempts local governments from imposing stricter vehicle carry rules. Carrying with unlawful intent remains a crime under section 724.4.
Unlawful transport or carrying with intent to use under Iowa Code 724.4 is an aggravated misdemeanor; prohibited-person violations carry felony penalties.
