Garage, yard, and apartment sales in Chicago are restricted to the hours between 9 AM and sunset, for a maximum of three consecutive days per sale.
Under Chicago's garage sale ordinance, all sales must take place between 9 AM and sunset. No evening or nighttime sales are permitted. Each sale is limited to three consecutive days within these hours. Items for sale must be displayed only within the property lines (inside the garage, backyard, or side driveway) per MCC 10-8-405. Signs advertising the sale may only be placed on the property where the sale occurs - not on city property (MCC 10-8-320). After the sale concludes, all unsold items must be removed from outdoor display. Items left on the property visible from the public way after the sale may be cited as a sanitation violation.
Operating outside permitted hours carries fines of $50 to $500. Items displayed on the public way carry separate fines. Signs on city property carry fines of $50 to $500.
