Chicago requires Department of Buildings permits for outdoor kitchens with gas piping, electrical wiring, or plumbing under MCC Chapter 14A. Trade work must be performed by Chicago-licensed Master Plumbers and Electrical Contractors.
Under MCC Chapter 14A (Administrative Provisions of the Building Code), any work involving gas piping, electrical circuits, or plumbing for an outdoor kitchen requires DOB permits, regardless of whether the work is indoors or outdoors. A gas permit requires a Chicago-licensed Master Plumber under MCC 4-296 to perform the work, with inspection by DOB. An electrical permit requires a Chicago-registered Electrical Contractor under MCC 4-290. A standalone masonry BBQ island without utilities is generally exempt from a building permit if under 6 feet tall and not enclosed. Outdoor kitchens with gas appliances must maintain 10-foot clearance from combustible construction per MCC 14F-3-307.5. Multi-family buildings need additional condo or HOA approval.
Unlicensed gas or electrical work violates MCC 4-290 and 4-296 with citations adjudicated under MCC 2-14-074. Fines start at $500 and escalate to $1,000 for repeats. Stop-Work Orders apply, and utilities will not connect without DOB sign-off.
