Chicago Fire Code Section 14F-3-307.5 prohibits charcoal and gas grills on balconies and within 10 feet of combustible construction in multi-family buildings (R-2 occupancy). LPG containers over 1 lb are not allowed indoors or on most balconies.
Chicago adopts the International Fire Code through MCC Chapter 14F. Section 14F-3-307.5 prohibits charcoal and open-flame gas cooking devices on combustible balconies of multi-family residential buildings (R-2 occupancy, defined as three or more dwelling units). An exception applies if the building is fully sprinklered. LPG container storage in occupied buildings is limited to 1 lb water capacity under Section 14F-61-6104, so standard 20 lb propane tanks may not be stored in apartments or on most balconies. CFD's Bureau of Fire Prevention enforces these rules with inspections. Single-family homes and detached units may use BBQs on patios with a 10-foot clearance from any structure. Electric grills are not open-flame devices and are generally allowed.
CFD Bureau of Fire Prevention issues citations adjudicated through Administrative Hearings under MCC 13-12-100. Penalties under MCC 14F-1-109 range from $200 to $1,000 per violation. Building owners can be cited for tenant grills on common balconies and held jointly responsible.
