Chicago Municipal Code Section 8-32-070 restricts amplified sound on public ways to average conversational level at 100 feet. Between 10 PM and 8 AM, amplified sound on private property must not exceed conversational level at 100 feet from the property line.
Section 8-32-070 of the Chicago Municipal Code (Noise and Vibration Control) regulates music and amplified sound. On public ways, no person may use any device that creates or amplifies sound β including loudspeakers, amplifiers, musical instruments, radios, or recorded music β louder than average conversational level at a distance of 100 feet or more from the source. On private open space between 10:00 PM and 8:00 AM, amplified sound cannot be louder than average conversational level at 100 feet or more from the property line. Exemptions exist between 8 AM and 10 PM for public assemblies, parades, athletic events, and permitted outdoor special events. Section 8-32-030 defines a noise disturbance as any sound audible at 600 feet or more from the source, which applies at all hours.
Noise violations under Chapter 8-32 carry fines of $300 for a first offense, $500 for a second offense within one year, and $1,000 for a third or subsequent offense within one year. The police superintendent may require a compliance plan from repeat offenders.
