Chicago Area Noise Ordinance Guide (2026)

By CityRuleLookup Team

The Chicago metropolitan area spans Cook County and several surrounding counties, and noise ordinances vary from one municipality to the next. Chicago itself has one of the most detailed noise codes in the Midwest, while suburban communities each set their own standards. Whether you live in a high-rise downtown or a single-family home in the suburbs, understanding the local noise rules helps you navigate complaints and stay compliant.

City of Chicago Noise Ordinance

Chicago's noise ordinance is enforced under the Municipal Code of Chicago (Chapter 8-32). The city uses both qualitative and decibel-based standards. Residential nighttime limits (10 PM to 8 AM) are set at 55 dB measured at the property line. Daytime limits for residential areas are 65 dB. The city also has specific provisions targeting amplified music, construction noise, and motor vehicle noise. Chicago's noise enforcement is handled by the Department of Buildings and the Chicago Police Department, depending on the type of complaint.

Quiet Hours

Chicago's quiet hours run from 10 PM to 8 AM, which is slightly later on the morning end than many other major cities. During quiet hours, noise from any source must not exceed the 55 dB residential limit. Music, parties, and other social gatherings are the most common source of complaints during these hours. The city has specific penalty structures for repeat offenders, with fines starting at $300 and increasing with subsequent violations.

Suburban Variations

The suburbs surrounding Chicago have their own noise ordinances. Evanston enforces quiet hours from 10 PM to 7 AM and has specific provisions for noise from bars and restaurants. Oak Park sets quiet hours from 10 PM to 7 AM with residential decibel limits that are slightly lower than Chicago's. Schaumburg follows a similar structure with enforcement through its police department. Arlington Heights enforces quiet hours from 10 PM to 7 AM and has specific rules about power equipment and lawn mower use during early morning hours.

Construction Noise

Construction noise in Chicago is restricted to weekdays from 8 AM to 8 PM. Weekend construction requires a special permit and is generally limited to Saturday from 8 AM to 5 PM. No construction is permitted on Sundays or city holidays without an emergency permit. In the suburbs, construction hours are typically weekdays from 7 AM to 7 PM and Saturdays from 8 AM to 5 PM, though exact hours vary by municipality. Skokie and Des Plaines both have construction noise ordinances that track closely with Chicago's standards.

Filing Complaints

In Chicago, noise complaints can be filed through 311 (phone or app). The 311 system routes complaints to the appropriate city department based on the type of noise. For construction noise, the Department of Buildings handles enforcement. For general noise (parties, music, barking dogs), the police department responds. In suburban communities, noise complaints typically go through the local police department's non-emergency line. Documenting the noise with timestamps and descriptions strengthens any complaint.
