Quiet hours in Evanston, IL — also called the noise ordinance, nighttime noise rules, or residential quiet time — define the hours during which excessive noise is prohibited.
Evanston Title 9, Chapter 4 prohibits unreasonable noise at all hours, with heightened enforcement between 10:00 PM and 8:00 AM on weekdays and 10:00 PM to 9:00 AM on weekends and holidays. The city uses both a subjective disturbance standard and specific decibel limits based on zoning district.
Under Evanston City Code Title 9, Chapter 4 (Noise Control), no person may make or cause noise that unreasonably disturbs the peace of any person of normal sensibilities. During nighttime hours (10 PM to 8 AM weekdays, 10 PM to 9 AM weekends), noise limits are especially enforced. Residential zones carry a 55 dBA daytime / 50 dBA nighttime limit at the property line. Commercial zones allow 60 dBA daytime / 55 dBA nighttime. Evanston's proximity to Northwestern University means enforcement is active in both student-heavy neighborhoods and family residential areas.
