Evanston restricts parking of recreational vehicles, boats, trailers, and campers on residential property. RVs and boats may not be stored in front yards or on the street for extended periods. Storage is permitted in rear yards and enclosed garages only, with size and screening requirements.
Under Evanston's Zoning Ordinance (Title 6), recreational vehicles, boats, boat trailers, campers, and motor homes may not be parked or stored in front yards or side yards visible from the street. Rear yard storage is permitted provided the vehicle or boat does not exceed height limits for accessory structures (typically 15 feet) and is adequately screened from neighboring properties. On-street parking of RVs and boats is limited to 48 hours for loading/unloading purposes. RVs may not be occupied as living quarters while parked on residential property. Evanston's compact lot sizes make RV and boat storage challenging, and the city enforces these restrictions proactively. Contact Code Enforcement at (847) 448-4311.
Violations carry fines of $50 to $200 per day. Vehicles stored in violation for more than 10 days after notice may be subject to towing at the owner's expense. Repeat offenders face escalated fines.
