Des Plaines residents may park a travel trailer, camper, recreational vehicle, boat, or moving trailer on the public street directly in front of their dwelling only for loading or unloading, for no more than 24 hours, and must first notify the police department.
Under City Code Section 7-3-2, residents may park a travel trailer, camper, recreational vehicle, boat, or moving trailer on a public street directly in front of the dwelling, or on the public parkway, only for purposes of loading or unloading and for no longer than twenty-four (24) hours, unless that parking would create a danger to public safety. Notification must be given to the Des Plaines Police Department before parking such a vehicle on a public street or parkway. Longer-term storage of these vehicles is pushed to private property, governed by the property-maintenance provisions referenced in Section 10-9-2 (adopted amendments to the International Property Maintenance Code). In February 2025 the City Council advanced tighter rules limiting RVs to one per residential lot, barring their use for sleeping or day-to-day living, and prohibiting connection to gas, water, sewer, or septic services, with a December 31 compliance deadline.
Exceeding the 24-hour loading window or parking without police notification subjects the vehicle to citation under Title 7 and possible tow; abandoning a vehicle on the street is a $150 fine under Section 7-10-6.
