Evanston restricts parking of commercial vehicles over 8,000 pounds GVW in residential districts. Smaller commercial vehicles may be parked in driveways but not on residential streets overnight. Semi-trucks, heavy equipment, and construction vehicles may not be stored in residential areas.
Under Evanston's Zoning Ordinance and parking regulations, commercial vehicles exceeding 8,000 pounds gross vehicle weight are prohibited from parking in residential districts. This includes semi-trucks, box trucks, dump trucks, and heavy construction equipment. Smaller commercial vehicles (work vans, pickup trucks with signage) used daily by the resident may be parked in the driveway but are subject to overnight street parking restrictions. No commercial vehicle may be parked on a residential street between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM. Vehicles must not leak fluids, create noise, or obstruct sight lines. Exemptions exist for active construction with valid permits and delivery vehicles during business hours. Contact Code Enforcement at (847) 448-4311.
Commercial vehicle parking violations carry fines of $50 to $200. Vehicles over 8,000 GVW parked in residential zones may be towed at the owner's expense. Repeat violations within 12 months result in escalated fines.
